August 2009: Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Seminar / Determination of Atmospheric Aerosol Properties Using Satellite Measurements
Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Hauptstrasse 5, 53604 Bad Honnef, Germany (www.pbh.de)
August 16-19, 2009
The WE-Heraeus Seminar (N439, http://www.we-heraeus-stiftung.de/ ) on Determination of Atmospheric Aerosol Properties using Satellite Measurements will be hosted by the Physics Center Bad Honnef (Hauptstrasse 5, D-53604 Bad Honnef, Germany, www.pbh.de) on August 16-19, 2009. The aim of the seminar is to bring together experts in the area of aerosol satellite remote sensing to discuss current problems and advances with respect to quantification of local and global aerosol characteristics derived from satellite top-of-atmosphere spectral, angular, and polarimetric measurements. The focus of the meeting is on the aerosol retrievals over land. The proceedings of the seminar will be per-reviewed and published as a separate hard cover book by Springer (Berlin). The templates can be found at www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/~lsr.
Original papers and reviews on satellite aerosol remote sensing and its validation are welcome. The publication must contain about 40 double-spaced pages in a format similar to that presented at www.iup.physik.uni-bremen.de/~lsr. It must be submitted to the local organizing committee using e-mail: alexk@iup.physik.uni-bremen.de before October 1st, 2009. The camera-ready copy is not required.

Welcome to the Earth System Science Research School (ESSRES) Programme !
In July 2007 the Helmholtz Association approved the foundation of a new Research School on Earth System Science which will officially start in summer 2008. In a joint initiative of Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven (AWI), University of Bremen (Uni-HB), and Jacobs University Bremen new generations of outstanding junior scientists will be trained and prepared in the interdisciplinary field of Earth System Sciences toward a doctoral degree.
The existing research infrastructure at the Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven (AWI), University of Bremen, Institute for Environmental Physics (Uni-HB/IUP), and Jacobs University Bremen offers a unique research environment to study past, present and future changes of the climate system. The foundation of the Earth System Research School at the AWI will focus on the integration of observations, palaeoclimate data, and climate modelling to better understand natural climate variations over a broad range of timescales and disciplines.
The overall expertise available in observation, modelling, and reconstruction at the participating institutions provides an extremely solid base for interdisciplinary research. This excellent working and scientific environment will provide PhD students with advanced training and research support. The Research School will offer world-class educational possibilities thanks to its staff of internationally-recognised and highly rated expert scientists. (more...)

20th anniversary of the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer
September 16, 2007 is the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the "Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer", an international agreement regulating the production and consumption of chemical compounds contributing to the depletion of the ozone layer. On the occasion of this anniversary this website provides an overview of important scientific contributions to the monitoring of ozone and other relevant minor constituents of the Earth atmosphere, which enable the verification of the successful implementation of the Montreal protocol.
