GHG-CCI: CRDP#3: Browse images: Satellite-derived XCO2

The purpose of this page is to provide an overview about the satellite-derived XCO2 data products as provided via the 3rd version of the Climate Research Data Package (CRDP#3) generated during Phase 2 (March 2014 - February 2017) of the ESA Climate Change Initiative (CCI) project GHG-CCI (see http://www.esa-ghg-cci-org -> CRDP (Data)).

Here we provide potentially interested users of our data products with information on when which product is available and how it "looks like". Note that the original products are "Level 2 products", i.e., XCO2 and related information (geolocation, uncertainty, averaging kernels, etc.) is provided for each individual satellite ground pixel.

As can be seen from the figures below, depending on product and time period, the products may differ significantly. This is due to a number of reasons, for example different spatio-temporal sampling (e.g., use of different quality filtering methods, different sensors) and different altitude sensitivity (averaging kernels) of the different algorithms/sensors. Interpretation of the data is therefore not straight forward and typically requires a carefull analysis often also using model simulations (with averaging kernels applied and model data spatio-temporally sampled as the satellite observations).

Below we provide browse images of the XCO2 data product: we show one figure per month at 10 deg x 10 deg spatial resolution (i.e., averaged data at much lower resolution than the satellite observations) for each of the products.

The figures shown here have been generated by (simple unweighted) averaging of the "per ground pixel" information as given in the CRDP Level 2 product files. Shown are 4 quantities:
