GHG-CCI: Data products

This website provides access to the satellite-derived atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) data products generated within the GHG-CCI project of ESA's Climate Change Initiative (CCI).

The table below provides a short overview about our core data products. These products are generated with so-called "ECV Core Algorithms" (ECAs) . These products are near-surface-sensitive dry-air column-averaged mole fractions (mixing ratios) of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), denoted XCO2 (in ppmv) and XCH4 (in ppbv) generated from SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT and TANSO-FTS onboard GOSAT.

We have not yet generated a single merged product obtained by "combining" products from different sensors covering the entire available satellite time series. Instead we provide products generated from individual sensors. We have however generated one merged product via the EMMA algorithm covering a limited time period (see below). Currently the EMMA product is primarily used as a comparison tool for the products generated with individual algorithms which define the ensemble of products used by EMMA.

Typically we have generated the same product (e.g., XCO2 from GOSAT) using different retrieval algorithms. We encourage users of our data products to make use of the fact that typically several different methods are available to generate a given product. This gives users the possibility to find out if important conclusions drawn by using one product are robust with respect to the method used to generate that product. This however may require significant effort and is therefore not always possible.

For users who only want to use one product but do not know which one to choose, we aimed at defining one recommended baseline product generated with a baseline algorithm (see table below). The other products are called alternative products. Note that the quality of an alternative product may be equivalent to the corresponding baseline product. Typically different methods have different strength and weaknesses and therefore which product to use for a given application typically depends on the application. For most products we found small but potentially significant differences between the baseline and the alternative products but have not yet been able to clearly identify which of the products is better (e.g., due to the limited number of ground-based validation sites). We aim at releasing each year improved version of our data sets which are called Climate Research Data Package (CRDP). At present the first version of the CRDP is available: CRDP#1 (details are given below). Improved versions of the CRDP will be released in the future. We aim at improving the data quality and to extend the time series. We also aim at significantly improving our data format especially with respect to better harmonization. This will enable users to easily use several products or to switch from one product to another. The various CRDP#1 products differ somewhat with respect to variable names etc. and users have to read carefully each corresponding Product Users Guide (PUG, see below) to use the products correctly.

The table below provides information on the GHG-CCI products generated with so-called "Additional Constraints Algorithms" (ACAs) . Note that these products are not the GHG-CCI core products. This implies that data format and other requirements are not as strictly handled as for our core products.
