Title: Simultaneous retrieval of cloud liquid water and total precipitable water over open ocean and sea ice using AMSR-E data

The Advance Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) was launched on May 4, 2002 aboard the NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua Satellite. This new instrument measures the Earth's radiation in two orthogonally polarized channels of 6 frequencies from 6.925 to 89.0 GHz. A physical method to simultaneously retrieve the cloud liquid water (CLW) and total precipitation water (TPW) is purposed by using the polarization differences. Comparisons are made between AMSR-E retrievals of CLW and TPW and those obtained using Wentz's method over open ocean. TPW compares well with Wentz's results, especially for TPW below 35 kg/m2. CLW also compares well with Wentz's results. But when CLW is high, a large bias exists between our retrieved results and Wentz's results. Because of lacking the information of the sea ice surface, only qualitative CLW and TPW are calculated over sea ice.
