Title:
Balloonborne insitu measurements of water vapor and methane with the CHILD spectrometer

Balloonborne insitu measurements are a unique possibility to obtain profile information about stratospheric tracegas concentrations. Altitude resolution is on the order of a few meters. The tunable laser diode spectrometer CHILD (compact high-altitude insitu laser diode) was flown in fall 2002 at altitudes of up to 32 km during an ENVISAT validation campaign.
After a short introduction to the CHILD instrument and its objectives, this talk will illustrate the hard work and the adventure of stratospheric ballooning, and conclude with the results of the mission and the future possibilities.
