Title:
Retrieval of atmospheric parameters from AMSU

Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU) is a microwave nadir sounder which can be used to derive atmospheric parameters like water vapor, temperature, and surface emissivity. AMSU has window channels which can be used for the retrieval of surface characteristics, temperature sounding channels around 54 GHz oxygen line (temperature profiling), and water vapor sounding channels around 183.31 GHz water vapor line (water vapor profiling).
The talk gives a brief introduction of the importance of water vapor in the atmosphere, and about the AMSU instrument. The optimal estimation method used for retrieval will be discussed in brief and some of the results regarding the retrieval of the aforesaid parameters will be discussed.
