Title: Using SCIAMACHY and OSIRIS to study the mesosphere

The atmosphere is a medium that scatters incident sunlight and albedo radiation but it can also be a source of radiation. The possible radiation sources can be chemiluminescence, resonant fluorescence or phosphorescence or energetic particle induced. Of course in every case the real origin of the energy is the sun.

The study of the optical atmospheric radiation can be done with both spectrometers and photometers. The former instruments have the advantage that they can provide spectral information while the latter have a throughput advantage so that measurements can be made with a shorter integration time. In this presentation some of the advantages of each type of instrumentation will be discussed and illustrated with examples from SCIAMACHY and OSIRIS that are providing new information on the mesosphere.
