On the Resolution of a Grating Spectrometer

A few months ago a few of us (Bleck-Neuhaus, Burrows, Notholt, Richter) were discussing during the seminar the maximum resolution of a grating spectrometer. Unfortunately, no consensus could be reached. Since no volunteer was found for this Friday seminar we will take the opportunity to discuss (i) first in general the resolution of a grating spectrometer and then (ii) show how its maximum possible resolution is limited. Maybe this time we get a consensus.
