As part of the BREDOM system, a network of ground-based UV/visible spectrometers operated by the University of Bremen, a DOAS instrument was installed and has been operating since August 2003 at Summit station in the interior of Greenland, which forms the highest elevation (3200 m above sea level) north of the Arctic Circle at 72°N, 38°W. The main target species of the measurements are O3, NO2 and BrO, where measurements are usually averaged to give two values (AM and PM) per day.

The measurement location at Summit provides a unique opportunity for satellite validation as it is a clean and high altitude site with a very large albedo year round. The measured quantities of the ground-based instrument are used for the validation of the UV/visible satellite instruments such as GOME and SCIAMACHY that apply a very similar measurement technique and cover among others the above mentioned species. Here, first comparisons of the IUP Bremen SCIAMACHY NO2 product and the columns measured by the DOAS ground-based instrument at Summit will be shown.
