SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography) has got three observational measurement modes: Nadir, Limb mode and the occultation mode. This presentation will focus on the occultation geometry. The principle is to look from the satellite through the atmosphere in the rising sun. The way of the ray through the atmosphere is approximately 2500 km. Therefore a small refraction angle has a significant influence on the measurement. It will be shown that the refraction angle depends on the season and on the wavelength of the light. Additionally, some consequences for data evaluation will be discussed.
