Verification of international agreements (such as Kyoto protocol) requires accurate monitoring of atmospheric Carbon Dioxide concentration. SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Cartography) on ENVISAT, is the operational space-based instrument that measures CO2 in the near infrared wavelength range (NIR).

Environmental effects of increasing atmospheric Carbon Dioxide will be presented, together with simulated SCIAMACHY nadir measurements and error analysis with WFM - DOAS retrieval algorithm. In order to improve current CO2 source and sink estimates, the needed accuracy of CO2 observations will be explored. First nadir IR results from SCIAMACHY will be shown.
