Remote sensing of NO2
DOAS method calculation
Set each gap to the correct option.
About this exercise type...

optical density = _ _ _

difference in optical density = _ _ _

slant column = _ _ _

Type the correct answer into each gap. You may need to use a calculator for some answers.

Fig e1: NO2 cross-section at 293 K

After correction for all effects apart from the NO2 absorption, the difference in optical thickness of a satellite measurement between the measurements at 435 and 438 nm is 0.0026.

Using the NO2 absorption cross-section given in the figure, estimate the amount of NO2 along the light path.

SC = 0.0026/(_ cm2/molec)

SC = _ molec/cm2

To which vertical column does this amount correspond if the measurement was taken at 30° SZA and exact nadir view?

AMF = _ = _

VC = SC/AMF = _ molec/cm2

Entering mathematical expressions
How to enter mathematical expressions in exercise gaps
General Spaces inside and outside expressions and the case of characters will usually be ignored.
Symbols Use * for multiplication and / for division.
Use ° or deg for degrees.
Use conventional function abbreviations, e.g. cos, rad etc.
Decimals E.g. 3.15, 0.02. Use only . for a decimal point. The number of decimal places to be entered will normally be stated in the exercise, if not enter the minimum reasonable number of decimal places.
Powers Enter e.g. 3-2 in the form 3^-2.
Enter 3·10-2 as 3E-2 or 3*10^-2.
