Master-Work

Writing your Master- or Diplomathesis in the ASUR group will give you the opportunity to work on current problems of the highly active research fields of stratospheric chemistry, stratospheric dynamics, and microwave radiative transfer. It will train basic skills in data handling and processing, retrieval of atmospheric parameters from remote measurements, as well as the graphical representation and the scientific interpretation of the results. It will impart the prerequisite for future challenges in environmental research. So make your interaction now!

Work 1: "Multi-annual studies of chlorine species and ozone in the Arctic and mid-latitude stratosphere using airborne microwave measurements"

Since 1994 ASUR has been improved by using a Helium-cooled superconducting detector. Measurements of the chlorine species ClO and HCl have been taken nearly every winter. By evaluating the time series from 1995 to 2000 chlorine activation in the arctic winters over the past years will be studied. The investigations will be expanded by a series of campaigns in 2002/2003 spanning from the arctic to tropical latitudes. Particular attention will be payed to events clearly outside the polar vortex where the presence of activated chlorine is not yet fully understood.

Schedule:
Month 1-3

Basics of microwave measurement methods and data analysis tools

Month 4-5

Retrieval of recent ClO and HCl measurements (using existing algorithms)

Month 6-8

Selection of enhanced chlorine events and study of their air parcel trajectory

Month 9-10

Data interpretation focusing on activation and/or transport mechanisms

Month 11-12

Final writing of master thesis

Work 2: "Studies for the validation of the MIPAS-instrument on the ENVISAT-satellite using airborne microwave radiometry"

From September 2002 to March 2003 the Airborne SUbmillimeter Radiometer ASUR will participate in four large field campaigns, with measurement locations reaching from the Arctic to the tropics. During these time periods the MIPAS-instrument on board the recently launched European satellite ENVISAT will take continuous measurements all over the globe. ASUR shares with MIPAS the operational data products Ozone, N2O, and HNO3, as well as some scientific products like NO, HCN, and H2O. The aim of this study is to search and analyze colocated measurements of ASUR and MIPAS. The comparisons of these measurements will be used for validation purposes of the MIPAS-instrument. Sufficient time and interest provided, comparisons of ASUR data with data from the radiometer of the ODIN satellite can also be performed. The work will be done in close co-operation with the validation of the SCIAMACHY-instrument, which also operates on board ENVISAT.

Schedule:
Month 1-3

Getting familiar with measurement methods and data analysis tools

Month 4-6

Search for co-located measurements, performance of air parcel trajectory calculations

Month 7-9

Analysis, comparison, and interpretation of co-located measurements in terms of altitude resolution, geographical location, and atmospheric variation

Month 10-12

Preparation of comparisons for release to the satellite communities and final writing of master thesis
