The
ACCENT project (Atmospheric Composition Change - the European Network)
is an European Network of Excellence, linking more than 45 institutions working
on aspects of atmospheric science in the troposphere throughout Europe. One of
the subprojects of ACCENT is
AT2
which is dealing with the development, validation, use and integration of
satellite measurements for atmospheric chemistry and aerosol applications. The
AT2 evolved from the TROPOSAT project which was part of
EUROTRAC-2.
The Institute of Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen has
several PI (Principle Investigator) contributions to the AT-2 project and also
takes part in a number of other ACCENT facilitated activities briefly listed
below.

Within the ACCENT project, our group contributed strongly to an ELearning
module on the retrieval of tropospheric NO2 columns from nadir satellite
measurements of UV/visbile radiances. The main goal of this module is to give an
interested student the opportunity to interactively learn more on the physical
fundamentals, the general concepts and the difficulties of the retrieval
process. The module comes with a lot of examples and on-line exercises but can
of course not replace a lecture.

In March 2006, the Third International DOAS Workshop took place in Bremen
with support from the ACCENT project. nearly 50 oral presentations and 30
posters were presented over three days on all aspects of development and
application of the DOAS technique.
More details can be found on the
webpage of the 3rd DOAS workshop. A CD with
the presentations given is available on request.

As part of the Dutch project
DANDELIONS (Dutch Aerosol and Nitrogen Dioxide
Experiments for Validation of OMI and SCIAMACHY),
two validation campaigns were held in Cabauw, The Netherlands in May - July 2005
and September 2006. ACCENT provided funding for participation of the IUP Bremen
MAXDOAS instrument (see our BREDOM page) as
well as instruments from IASB/BIRA and the IUP Heidleberg.
The data taken by our instrument have been used to provide validation for
tropospheric measurements from OMI and SCIAMACHY. Some first results can be
found in the posters listed below:

In September 2007, a workshop on the retrieval, validation and application of
tropospheric NO2 from satellite measurements has been organised as part of the
ACCENT AT2 activities. The workshop was hosted by KNMI. All details can be
found on the
workshop web page.

from Space" (PI A. Richter), the following reports can be downloaded:
For the ACCENT AT2 PI project "Retrieval of vertical columns of water
vapour from SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT satellite data" (PI S. Noël, see also
AMC-DOAS web page), the following reports can be downloaded:
The full annual reports of the AT-2 project are available on the
AT-2 page.
